A Legacy Forged in History
Seki’s story begins in the 13th century, during the Kamakura period (1185–1333), when master swordsmiths like Motoshige and Kaneshige settled in this small town in Gifu Prefecture. Drawn by the region’s abundant natural resources—iron-rich mountains, clear rivers, and pine forests perfect for charcoal—they laid the foundation for a craft that would endure for centuries. By the Muromachi period (1336–1573), Seki had become a thriving hub for samurai sword production, with over 300 swordsmiths hammering out blades revered for their beauty, strength, and sharpness.
These weren’t just weapons; they were works of art, forged through a meticulous process that combined iron, water, clay, and fire into something extraordinary. The techniques developed in Seki, known as Seki-den, produced swords so exceptional that they became legends across Japan. That same spirit of craftsmanship lives on today—not just in katanas, but in the modern knives that Seki produces, including the one we’re proud to bring to you.
From Samurai Swords to Kitchen Mastery
As Japan moved beyond its feudal era, the blade-making skills of Seki evolved to meet new demands. The end of the samurai age didn’t dim the city’s fire; instead, it sparked a transformation. Swordsmiths turned their expertise to crafting everyday tools—kitchen knives, scissors, and more—infusing them with the same precision and passion once reserved for warriors
